Braylon Edwards

The New York Jets can't catch a break thusfar in the 2010 campaign. The loss in week 1 against Baltimore in which their offense could not get anything going had fans believing the season was on the brink going into their matchup with the Patriots in week 2. Then they come up with a huge win at home vs the Patriots to level their record at 1-1 and all was right in Florham Park. But this morning, two days after that huge victory, Braylon Edwards has created a distraction. Edwards was arrested Tuesday morning for DWI, with a blood alcohol content of .16, twice the legal limit. This is not Edwards' first run in with the law and he is on probation for an incident stemming from his days with the Cleveland Browns. In addition, while with the Browns, Edwards was a teammate of Donte Stallworth, who was convicted of second degree manslaughter for killing Mario Reyes, 59, while driving under the influence so Edwards should be well aware that drinking and operating an automobile are not a good mix.

Unfortunately, people driving under the influence is an all too common occurrence; however, in the case of athletes and other celebrities it is even more pathetic because one would think that they have more than enough money to afford to pay a driver to drive them home at the end of the night. I mean, most non-celebrities take care of such a problem by asking a friend to be a designated driver for the night or they call a friend or family member to ask them to pick them up when the night is done, so why celebrities can't avoid a DUI is incomprehensible. If money is the issue with Edwards, it shouldn't be because the NFL or the teams offer 24 hour security and driving services at no cost to its players.

Everybody, obviously, makes mistakes, but this is one that could have easily been avoided for Edwards and the Jets. Now instead of riding high into their game in Miami with the 2-0 Dolphins, they'll have to deal with more distractions, which is never a good thing.
